annadānaṃ paraṃ dānaṃ vidyādānaṃ ataḥ paraṃ |

annena kṣaṇikā tṛptiḥ yāvajjīvaṃ ca vidyayā ||

Giving food to the hungry is a great act of charity (dānaṃ); but superior to it is the gift of knowledge (vidyādānaṃ).

(Because) food provides only temporarily satisfaction, while knowledge lasts for a lifetime.
